D R E A M P A L A C E is a temporary structure of audio and visual special effects created to simulate a space for dreaming. Situated in a small closet, the project aims to create an unexpected, disorientingly vast space utilizing forced perspective optical illusion techniques such as a formal re-shaping of the room, a reversal of ground and ceiling planes, perspectivally distorted digital graphic appliques, and a concealed layering of natural and electronic audio loops.
The installation allows a viewer to enter the room through a small opening at floor level, in a head first position lying flat on the ground. Once inside, the viewer remains lying down, surrounded by a scene of skies and cumulus cloud pillows. Looking up from the floor, the viewer experiences a 360 degree view of soft glowing image of rolling grassy hills far in the distance in the manner of a three-dimensional computer desktop background image. Softly layered electronic and natural audio samples, looped throughout the day via discretely located speakers, are enjoyed while Glade “Fresh Air” scented plug-ins fill the room.
The P A L A C E 's intent is to establish a narrative of escapism, however once in the space the viewer might wonder whether they are supposed to be escaping from the banality of our built environment (namely the closet they are lying in), or escaping from our increasingly digitized world of screens and electronics. Nevertheless, D R E A M P A L A C E situates itself between the real and the virtual: a seemingly infinite space contained within a tiny room.
